Sooner Pool likely to open later this week

Splash pad, Frontier open

Sooner Swimming Pool remains closed today after lightning struck the pool’s pump during an overnight storm last week. But Public Works Director Keith Henry says the pool could be repaired well enough to open later this week.

“We’re hoping to have repairs made and to get the pool running this afternoon, but it will take some time to balance the chemicals and have the pool ready to open,” Henry said earlier today. “We’re hopeful that we can have it open and ready to use by Thursday.”

The pool has been closed since a lightning strike damaged the pump’s electric motor at the 40-year-old pool last week. It was soon discovered that more parts were needed to fully repair the pump, but those parts have been difficult to locate due to the pool’s age.

“We should get the parts in today to provide a temporary fix until we can find the parts needed for the permanent repair,” Henry said, noting those repairs won’t take long to make once the parts are located and purchased.

The splash pad at Sooner Park, located near the pool at 420 S. Madison Blvd., and Frontier Pool, located at 312 S.W. Virginia Ave., are open.

City of Bartlesville-owned pools Sooner and Frontier are operated and managed by the Richard Kane YMCA. For information about swim lessons or other activities at either of the City-owned pools, visit the Richard Kane YMCA Facebook page or call 918-336-0713.
