English language learner honored with state award

Oct 2, 2026

Jose Vallejo, a participant in Bartlesville Public Library Literacy Services’ English language program, received the TFCU English as a Second Language Award during the 2026 Adult Learner Awards ceremony in Oklahoma City.

The award was presented during the Oklahoma Adult Education & Literacy Conference, which recognizes adult learners across Oklahoma for their dedication and achievements.

For Vallejo, learning English is about more than improving language skills.

After the death of his wife, he wanted to become more confident in English so he could better support his young daughter. He wanted to read with her, understand information from her school and help with homework.

“Jose has worked incredibly hard to improve his English, but what stands out most is why he wanted to learn,” said Cheryl Dorris, literacy coordinator at Bartlesville Public Library. “He wanted to be more involved in his daughter’s life and education, and we are so proud to see his hard work recognized with this award.”

Since joining the program, Vallejo has made significant progress. His confidence, vocabulary and pronunciation have improved, along with his score on the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems, or CASAS, assessment used to measure adult learners’ skills and progress.

Vallejo’s achievement highlights the impact adult education can have on individuals, families and the broader community.
