Green committee Oks recommendations to City Council
The Tower Green Design Committee on Wednesday wrapped up a five-month process by voting unanimously to approve a final design for the community green space project approved by voters in the March 6 General Obligation Bond Election.
Among the recommendations to be considered by the council during a regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 5 is the proposed name for the space, “The Green at Unity Square.” The City Council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 401 S. Johnstone Ave.
The project involves closing Silas Street, also known as Sixth Street, between Osage Avenue and Dewey Avenue and constructing a community gathering space in the area between the Price Tower and the Bartlesville Community Center. A committee/board representing both organizations will be created to oversee all operations at the space, including performance bookings, marketing and maintenance.
The committee, with the help of project consultant and local architect Scott Ambler, brought the recommended project design in at the voter-approved budget of $1.75 million.
Numerous public meetings as well as a public survey were held to obtain input from citizens on the project, which heavily influenced the committee’s final recommendations. In addition to the naming of the space, recommendations include:
- Renovation of the existing fountain at its current location
- Establishment of an entertainment venue directly south of the Price Tower, facing southward
- Installation of restrooms
- A large, multi-functional open lawn area to be located where the “66” sign is currently
- Natural rock features and native materials throughout
The City Council is expected to hear a presentation and consider final approval of the project design on Monday. The meeting is open to the public and will be televised on Cable One’s local programming. The meeting may also be viewed on the City of Bartlesville website/webcast, at https://www.cityofbartlesville.org – https://www.cityofbartlesville.org/city-government/city-council/webcast/.
