Little firefighters learn big lessons at fire station

Oct 17, 2025

Over the past two weeks, Central Fire Station in Bartlesville transformed into a hub of excitement, curiosity and learning as nearly 500 first-graders from the area poured in for Fire Prevention Week. The annual event, hosted by the Bartlesville Fire Department, was more than just a field trip — it was a hands-on adventure into the world of fire safety and prevention.

From the moment the youngsters arrived, they were greeted by the sights and sounds of a real-life fire station. Fire trucks gleamed in the sun, gear was laid out for inspection, and the station buzzed with energy. Firefighters dedicated an hour to each group, guiding them through fire safety basics and showing off the tools of their trade.

“It is really important to teach youngsters the importance of fire safety and prevention,” said Fire Chief H.C. Call. “We want to help them learn and have no fear in a fire situation.”

The lessons were far from boring. Kids practiced crawling low under simulated smoke using a fog-filled room with indoor and outdoor exits. They learned how to feel doors with the back of their hand to check for heat, and the difference between escaping a burning structure and using “stop, drop, and roll” when clothing catches fire.

One of the highlights? Getting loud. “We also let them practice yelling loudly and reaching out to get a firefighter’s attention, practically tackling him, which they loved,” Call added.

The children also explored the firetruck, slid down the firefighter’s slide, and even got to handle the fire hose. Sparky the Fire Dog made a special appearance, delighting the crowd and reinforcing the message that fire safety can be fun and empowering.

A key takeaway for the students was the importance of a family escape plan — knowing all exits, having a designated meeting spot, and never re-entering a burning home. Firefighters emphasized that being prepared can make all the difference.

“They sat down, paid attention, and asked plenty of questions,” Call said. “We had fun with them, and more importantly, they left with knowledge that could one day save their lives.”

The Bartlesville Fire Department’s public relations team helped coordinate the annual event, ensuring that all area first-graders had the opportunity to participate.
