Pavement rejuvenation project underway

Jul 12, 2022

The City’s first Reclamite® Asphalt Pavement Rejuvenation Project got underway Monday and should be completed by Friday, barring any unexpected delays, said Shelley Charles, City of Bartlesville civil project engineer.

On Monday, contract crews began applying the spray-on rejuvenator to Rogers Avenue, Penn Avenue and Lannom Place from 14th Street south to Lannom Place. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they will move to Tuxedo Boulevard and cover the asphalt between the Caney River and Madison Boulevard. Additionally, they will apply product to half the street along one city block at another location, to use as a product performance comparison site.

“The City is currently planning to incorporate this treatment as part of our pavement maintenance program to test the product and see if it will be a viable option to extend the life of our streets,” said Charles. “The use of pavement rejuvenators is becoming a popular part of road maintenance programs across the United States, as a way of helping to stretch budgets and conserve resources.”

Charles said the product is used to extend the life of newer asphalt pavement by penetrating and restoring lost components in the asphalt.

“Product literature and independent studies have shown the product to be an effective method of restoring and preserving asphalt, helping to delay the aging process and the subsequent need for pavement replacement,” she said. “When used in pavement maintenance programs, application is usually on a four-to six-year basis, but even a single treatment is supposed to significantly reduce the pavement’s aging process.”

Charles said the product cost is generally one-third to one-half of conventional wear course treatments.

“The effectiveness of the product will be evaluated over the course of a few years to see if it makes sense to continue using the product,” she said. “Our hope is that pavement life is extended, which will help conserve both our maintenance budget and our natural resources.”

Temporary lane closures should be expected throughout the duration of the project.
