The Quail Place Tributary Drainage Project got underway this week with contract crews notifying residents in the area that construction will soon begin, Director of Engineering Micah Siemers said Monday.
The project, approved by voters in the 2018 General Obligation Bond Election, consists of improvements to the drainage system in the Woodland Park area, which has experienced flooding issues in recent years.
Siemers said contract crews will begin work on the west end of the project at Cherokee Hills Drive, in the area between 1331 Cherokee Hills Drive and 1361 Evergreen Drive.
“The channel we are working on is located just north of Quail Place and runs east/west parallel to Quail Place to its intersection with Evergreen Drive,” Siemers said. “They will begin work downstream of Cherokee Hills and then have to close Cherokee Hills completely while they replace the drainage structure under the road. Once they complete that work, the rest of the work will take place in back yards between Cherokee Hills Drive and Evergreen Drive.”
Siemers said the project will essentially increase the size and capacity of the existing concrete-lined drainage channel and the box culvert under Cherokee Hills Drive.
“Although this project won’t eliminate all drainage issues in this area, it will target elimination of the rainfall events that cause nuisance flooding,” he said.
Completion for the project is targeted for the end of March, pending any major weather delays.
