The City-owned Sooner and Frontier swimming pools are set to open for the season on May 24. City-owned splash pads could open sooner, weather permitting.
“We winterize these facilities for the colder months, and it’s quite a lengthy process to prepare the pools for opening for the summer,” said Public Works Director Keith Henry. “We almost always find some issues that need to be dealt with, such as water leaks and busted pipes, so we start the process early enough to be ready to open in May, typically around Memorial Day weekend.”
Henry said Building Maintenance crews are working now to get the pools ready for opening next month, and that splash pads could open sooner, depending on weather.
“The splash pads don’t require as much to reopen, so as soon as the temperatures warm up enough we can get those open fairly quickly,” he said.
Henry said improvements at both Frontier and Sooner pools have been completed recently or are currently underway.
“We just reconditioned the slides at Frontier Pool, so they are super slick,” Henry said. “And of course we’ve added additional parking and made several improvements at Sooner Park. This has resulted in more people visiting the park, so we’ve ordered some additional furniture for the pool area to accommodate the increase.”
The City of Bartlesville owns and maintains the pools, but they are operated and managed by the Richard Kane YMCA. To inquire about programs or lifeguard positions, visit https://rkymca.org/ or contact the YMCA at 918.336.0713.
