‘Suspicious device’ case turned over to state agency

May 11, 2016

Bartlesville police have turned a case that started as a report of a “suspicious device” on Pathfinder over to the Oklahoma Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, BPD Capt. Jay Hastings said Wednesday.

According to Hastings, on Tuesday afternoon (May 10) at approximately 1 p.m., the Bartleville Police Department received a call of a suspicious device on a bench along pathfinder parkway.

“The location was on the path a short distance east of Silver Lake Road,” Hastings said. “Officers arrived and determined the device looked like a possible pipe bomb. The Tulsa Bomb Squad and ATF were contacted and came to the scene, where the small device was detonated.”

Hastings said a suspect was developed quickly by ATF agents and that, after an interview, “there were concerns that similar devices might be in a residence connected to the suspect.”

On Wednesday morning, (May 11) the ATF and Tulsa Bomb Squad searched the residence, which was located in the 3100 block of SE Debbie Lane, Hastings said.

“Bartlesville police blocked off the street and notified the neighbors in the immediate area,” he said. “Wayside school was also contacted while fire and ambulance personnel stood by. The Tulsa Bomb Squad was able to remove other devices from the home and detonate them in a field nearby.”

No one was injured and no threats have been made concerning the incident, Hastings said.

The case is being handled by the ATF.
