PSO urging power conservation

From Public Service Company of Oklahoma

Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), acting upon a request of the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), is asking all customers to implement energy conservation measures to mitigate the risk of worsening conditions with power supplies in the region.  SPP, the regional entity that manages the electric grid across 17 central and western U.S. states, is asking for those conservation measures over the next several days.

According to SPP’s analysis of current forecast data, the region’s energy supply may continue to tighten over the next several days because of persistent, widespread and extreme cold.  Customers can help reduce the risk of widespread and longer-lasting outages by temporarily reducing the amount of energy they use.

PSO asks its customers to turn down thermostats and reduce usage of large appliances to limit the use of electricity, so that no further measures are necessary. The company stresses that customers should use energy needed for personal safety and to protect against property damage but minor adjustments to thermostats and other measures can make a significant difference to the system.

February 13:

Major storm expected to bring several inches of snow over coming days

City crews have been working since around 3:30 a.m. today to treat intersections and main arterials after a winter storm moved into the area early Sunday morning.

“We will be working 12-hour shifts for as long as necessary,” Public Works Director Keith Henry said at 6 a.m.

Several inches of snow are expected across the state in the coming days, with estimates at four to eight inches for our region Sunday and Monday, and two to four more inches expected mid-week. According to the National Weather Service, higher amounts are possible.

Northerly winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts approaching 30 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow, Washington County Emergency Management reported yesterday.

“Travel will become difficult to impossible during this time with near white out conditions possible. The dangerous cold will only intensify during the storm and following it Monday night into Tuesday,” WCEM said.

Updates throughout this storm will be posted on this page and on the City’s Facebook page, City of Bartlesville GOV.

City streets

During snow and/or ice events, the Public Works Department applies a sand and salt mixture to city streets where needed, in accordance with the City’s Snow Removal Policy.

Priority is given to streets in the following order:

  1. Major arterial streets
  2. Collector streets
  3. Residential streets

See full Snow and Ice Removal Policy.

Equipment

The Public Works Department currently has seven trucks capable of snow plowing and sanding. These trucks are prepped by City staff well in advance — typically in November — for the upcoming season to ensure they are serviced and all equipment is in working order.

Some equipment, such as spreader boxes and snowplows, are detachable; therefore, these pieces of equipment remain detached so the trucks can be used for other work when the additional equipment is not needed.

The number of trucks and the equipment used during an event depends on the amount of accumulation. When minor accumulation is forecast, the trucks are equipped with sand boxes but not snow plows, as the plows can be dangerous to have on the truck, if not needed, and only take about 10 minutes to attach if they are needed.

A minimum of two trucks are equipped and used during no or light accumulation. During major events, when significant accumulation is forecast, all seven trucks are utilized.

Staff on-call, work as needed

One staff member is on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week. During snow and/or ice events, the on-call staff member will determine how much additional assistance will be needed based on the severity of the event and call out other staff accordingly. During major events, crews will work 12-hour shifts for as long as needed.
