Garage sales: Sign placement dos & don’ts

Apr 26, 2022

It’s garage sale time again, and the Community Development Department is gearing up for what is sure to be a busy season.

“Spring and summer are the busiest times of year for our Code Enforcement officers,” said Assistant Community Development Director Greg Collins. “In addition to high grass, trash, and other complaints that we receive, we respond to multiple reports of garage sale violations each year — and particularly to garage sale sign placement.”

Collins said a few ground rules to remember when it comes to signage are:

  • Two signs are allowed on the property where the sale is held; maximum sign size is six square feet
  • Two signs may be placed off-site property only with the property owner’s permission; maximum sign size is three square feet
  • Signs cannot be placed in the right of way or create a sight obstruction

“If you’re not sure, a good rule of thumb is to stay 10 feet away from the curb and three feet from the sidewalk,” Collins said. “If you’re between the curb and the sidewalk, you’re most likely in the right of way.”

Garage sales do not require a permit from the City, but by ordinance, a sale may last no more than three and a half days and no more than two sales may be held at the same property over a three-month period.
