City Parks Department crews took down the once-mighty oak tree that stood at Unity Square Park, located at Sixth Street and Dewey Avenue, after decaying wood on the north side created a safety hazard for park-goers.
“We started noticing it was having problems about two years ago,” said Parks Department Supervisor Bobby Robinson. “We tried everything we could to save it. We gave it two years to bounce back, but it just never did.”
Robinson estimated the tree to be at least 30 years old.
