BFD: Fireworks not permitted in city limits

Jun 28, 2022

Bartlesville Kiwanis Club will host its annual “Freedom Fest” event on Monday, July 4, in Sooner Park, but individual fireworks are not permitted within the city limits, Fire Chief David Topping said recently.

“Sparklers, ‘snakes,’ and things of that nature that are classified as novelty items rather than fireworks are allowed, but fireworks — anything that makes noise or shoots into the air — is prohibited,” Topping said.

Arranged fireworks displays are permitted for companies that are licensed and have trained personnel to administer classified fireworks, but individual permits are not issued. This does not necessarily apply to other cities in Washington County or rural areas.

“The Fourth is a great holiday to get out with your friends and family and have fun — and we want everyone to do that. But we also want everyone to be safe,” Topping said. “Thousands of injuries are reported each year nationwide due to mishandling fireworks, boating accidents and travel over the Fourth of July holiday.”

Bartlesville Fire Department urges everyone to keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Always read and follow label directions
  • Always have an adult present
  • Only buy from reliable fireworks sellers
  • Only ignite fireworks outdoors
  • Be sure to have water handy
  • Never make your own fireworks
  • Light only one at a time
  • Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks
  • Never give fireworks to small children
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place
  • Dispose of fireworks properly
  • Never throw fireworks at another person
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers

The Kiwanis Freedom Fest 2022 festivities will begin at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 4. The fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m. For more information, see www.bartlesvillekiwanis.org.
