City seeks letter issued to water customers

Jul 13, 2021

Social media chatter and a local resident’s inquiry concerning a letter regarding the safety of City of Bartlesville water has Water Utilities Director Terry Lauritsen reaching out to assure City utility customers that Bartlesville is safe, and that the letter was not issued by the City of Bartlesville.

“A local resident approached me recently to ask about a letter she received from the City stating there are cancer-causing chemicals in our water,” Lauritsen said today. “I assured her that Bartlesville water is safe — a fact that has been established and published annually by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and other regulatory bodies — and that no such letter was issued by the City of Bartlesville.”

Lauritsen said the letter was apparently mailed to at least one Bartlesville neighborhood, and that he is hopeful someone with a copy of the letter will contact the Water Utilities Department.

“We take this sort of thing very seriously,” he said. “We are seeking a copy of the letter so we can ensure the City is not being misrepresented and that our utility customers are receiving factual information.”

Lauritsen speculates the letter might be a sales pitch for a for-profit reverse osmosis or other water filtering company.

“It could be a sales tactic — that sort of thing is not uncommon — but we won’t know for sure until we locate one of the letters,” he said.

If you have a copy of the letter or information concerning this matter, please contact Lauritsen at 918.338.4116.
