Contracts approved for Sunset Bridge, streets

Aug 5, 2025

A project to replace the Sunset Bridge over Butler Creek got a thumbs up from the City Council on Monday with approval of a contract with Bright Lighting to begin construction within the next six months.

Initially approved by voters in the 2020 General Obligation Bond Election, the $2.1 million project is funded through multiple sources, including $1.2 million in sales tax funds, $396,133 from the 2022 issuance of the 2020 G.O. Bond Fund, and $418,236 from the 2023 issuance of the 2020 G.O. Bond Fund.

The project consists of the bridge deck construction and guardrail improvements. Plans are to construct a parallel pedestrian bridge over Butler Creek as part of the Pathfinder Parkway as well; however, escalating construction costs have pushed this portion of the project back until additional funds can be identified.

Streets

The council also approved a contract with Brent Bell Construction to resurface/rehabilitate several Bartlesville streets. The streets included in the project are:

  • Highland from Sunset to Brentwood
  • Dewey Avenue from Adams to 16th Street
  • Quail Ridge from Adams to Baylor Drive
  • Cambridge Court from Rice Creek Road to Williamsburg Street
  • Braddock Road from Claremont Drive to Camelot Drive
  • Southport Drive from Quarry Park Drive to Clipper Court
  • Clipper Court from Southport Drive to the cul-de-sac

Quail Ridge, Cambridge, and Braddock were identified as priority projects. Highland, Dewey, Southport, and Clipper Court are discretionary projects. Each project consists of standard asphalt mill and overlay within the project limits except for Clipper Court, which consists of full depth reconstruction. Minor amounts of curb and gutter will be replaced as needed. Sidewalk and ramp improvements will be installed as required.

Funding in the amount of $1,515,000 was originally budgeted for the project in the 2023 issuance of the 2020 G.O. Bond, of which $88,500 has been used to date for design services, leaving $1,426,000 for the construction portion of the project. The lowest compliant bid, by Brent Bell Construction, was $1,446,661 for base and add-alternate, which is $20,661 over the original budget for this project. The funding gap will be managed with funds remaining from the concrete streets panel replacement project.
