K-9 Borg, 9, recently retired and will enjoy his Golden Years with handler BPD Sgt. Andrew Ward, thanks to a vote of the City Council on Monday.
Permission for Ward to adopt Borg was required because he is considered surplus property.
“Borg has reached the age of 9 years, placing him in the age range of 8-10 years of average effective service to the police industry,” said BPD Capt. Troy Newell. “Borg has reached the age where his abilities as an effective police asset will diminish as he continues to age.”
Oklahoma law requires that a K-9’s handlers have the option of adopting the dogs under their care.
“We are very grateful for Borg’s service to our department and the Bartlesville community,” said Police Chief Tracy Roles. “We wish him the best in his retirement.”
