A large-scale project aimed at extending the life of several of Bartlesville’s most highly-traveled streets got underway this week. The $3.7 million project means motorists can expect some level of disruption on the affected streets at least through July.

“This is a large-scale project that involves crack sealing the streets and then applying a Bonded Matrix Overlay,” said Director of Engineering Micah Siemers.

BMO is similar to microsurfacing but is a more robust option capable of holding up to higher traffic volumes and speeds, Siemers said. It consists of an aggregate chip seal topped with a High Density Mineral Bond (HA5) to seal the pavement.

“Essentially, contract crews will be filling cracks in the asphalt with a rubberized sealant, which will help prevent water and debris from penetrating the pavement. Then the BMO will be added for further protection and extend the life of these roads.”

Siemers said Tuesday contract crews with Holbrook Asphalt started crack sealing last Friday and have completed Bison Road from Tuxedo to Nowata and Tuxedo between Madison and Bison.

“Each phase of the project should move pretty quickly, but motorists are going to see some disruption and should be prepared for that,” Siemers said.

He said the most disruptive part of the process will likely be the HA5 application.

“They have to apply two coats and each coat requires a 12-hour closure,” he said. “The affected lanes will be closed between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for two consecutive days to accommodate this part of the process.”

Businesses should be able to continue conducting business throughout the project, but some ingress and egress may be more difficult for residents in affected areas.

“The contractor has a methodology to keep businesses open during this work, but in residential areas, they will basically have to coordinate really close with residents and shuttle them in and out, if necessary, or work around major issues like medical needs.”

Holbrook Asphalt contract crews will provide information to business owners and residents on the sections of roadway they will be working on with the process information along with a QR code to access a website launched about the project, which can be viewed HERE.

Motorists should expect some level of disruption until the project is completed, anticipated to be around mid-July.

“Every effort will be made to keep one side of these roads open while contact crews work on the other side, but everyone should keep the project in mind and perhaps allow a little more time to get through areas where the work is underway,” Siemers said.

The streets on the approved list are primarily higher traffic volume streets with speed limits in the 40-45 mph range.

Streets included in the project are:

  • Bison Road — Tuxedo Boulevard to Nowata Road
  • Tuxedo Boulevard — Madison Boulevard to Bison Road
  • Madison Boulevard — Tuxedo Boulevard to Price Road
  • Price Road — Washington Boulevard to Madison Boulevard
  • Frank Phillips Boulevard — Sunset Boulevard to Keeler, Delaware to Hillside Drive and Avondale Street to Madison Boulevard
  • Johnstone Avenue — Adams Boulevard to 14th Street and Fourth Street to Fifth Street
  • Nowata Road — Silver Lake Road to Washington Boulevard
  • Jefferson Place — Lincoln Road to Boardwalk Court
