Q&A: Bags pile up at City Recycle Center

Jan 17, 2023

Why is Replenysh stockpiling all the open bags of recycled materials at the City Recycle Center? What is going on at the south end of the center? It looks like someone may be hand-wrapping cardboard and aluminum cans into rectangular shapes for trucks to eventually haul away.

According to Replenysh, the company that operates the recycling program at the City-owned drop-off center, located at 10th Street and Virginia Avenue, there are 35 cardboard bales at the site that will be picked up by the company’s mill partner this week.

Replenysh officials said two things contributed to the pile-up: Their baler was down for a couple of weeks so a smaller baler had to be used, and the sorting process was slowed because of contamination at the site. Apparently, there has been a “high level of contamination with PET, HDPE and thermoform plastics,” caused by recyclers not sorting the materials properly.

“If we could reduce this contamination at the center, our team could bale much faster, as they spend time removing contaminants from each bag before baling,” Replenysh Head of Operations Jared McMahon said when contacted recently..

McMahon said last week the larger baler had been repaired and, with less contamination at the site, the stored sacks could start to disappear by the end of the week.

Any news on that?

Any news on completion and opening of the new VA facility?

According to the Community Development Department, the contractor on the Veterans Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic project has said they hope to have work complete by the end of February. However, a target date for the VA to open the facility has not been shared with City staff. Work on the reported $2.8 million renovation is underway at 3005 S.E. Frank Phillips Blvd.
