The preventative street maintenance project currently affecting several Bartlesville streets is still underway, with completion now set for September.
The project, which is aimed at extending the life of the city’s most highly-traveled roadways, must be done over four phases, requiring the roads to be left temporarily in varying conditions pending the final portion of the project, the application of HA5. The phases are: crack sealing, application of aggregate chip seal, application of HA5, and striping.
The overall project has faced delays since it began in May due to unusually high levels of rainfall in the area through mid July, along with contractor equipment failures and a switch in subcontractors early in the project.
The project hit another snag this week, when City staff stopped work on the project due to dust generated through the sweeping process.
“Once the aggregate chip seal is applied, it needs to sit for approximately two weeks before the contractor can sweep the roads and apply HA5 over the top of the chip seal,” said City Manager Mike Bailey. “When contract crews initially began sweeping the loose aggregate, they did not have the proper equipment on-site to safely do the job, so in the interest of public safety, City staff required them to utilize a street sweeper. This also resulted in unexpected delays, but they are expected to resume sweeping with a street sweeper on Thursday (July 31).”
According to a schedule released Tuesday by Holbrook Asphalt, the contractor on the project, the HA5 portion of the project is set to resume next week. This will require multiple road closures for 12-hour periods over several weeks. Lane striping will be done in the final phase of the project, anticipated to be within the next few weeks.
“We understand this project has caused inconvenience for many of our residents,” Bailey said. “We are hopeful the remaining phases will be completed as quickly as possible, which is set to be no later than mid-September, barring any unforeseen circumstances.”
The following schedule indicates dates that portions of affected roadways will be subject to closures to accommodate the HA5 portion of this project.
