Contract for Adams greens rebuild approved

October 4, 2023

Design is expected to get underway soon on the greens reconstruction project for the City-owned Adams Golf Course following City Council approval of a contract with design firm Heckenkemper Golf Course Design on Monday.

The $700,000 greens rebuild project was included in the 2020 General Obligation Bond and includes the reconstruction of half of the greens at Adams Golf Course.

The newest greens at Adams were rebuilt in 2000, and the remaining greens, original to the course, were built in the early 1960s.

“Generally, the serviceable life for greens is around 20 years before maintenance becomes difficult and playability degrades,” said Director of Engineering Micah Siemers. “It is estimated that the majority of the greens have lost 25-35 percent of the playing surface due to encroachment of the fringe.”

The master plan for Adams Golf Course was last updated in 1999 in advance of the greens reconstruction project that was completed in 2000, and one of the priority projects included on the ballot for the upcoming G.O. Bond, set for election on Oct. 10, will be additional funding to reconstruct the remaining nine holes of the greens, plus the putting green, chipping green, and green nursery for $1.2 million.

Golf course staff have also secured private funding to supplement the original $700,000 in G.O. Bond funds to offset inflation and ensure half of the greens can be completed with available funding, along with design services.

The City Council previously approved a design contract with Heckenkemper Golf Course Design to update the master plan for Adams Golf Course with the understanding that the contract would be amended at a later date to include design services for the greens reconstruction project. The master planning contract was approved for $39,500. Approval of the agenda item Monday adds $205,500 to the contract, for a total revised contract amount of $245,000.

“Design of the greens reconstruction needs to begin in October to facilitate beginning construction on the greens next spring,” Siemers said. “But meeting that construction date is dependent on what happens in the G.O. bond election on Oct. 10 and the first issuance of the bond being available in time.”

The design contract is for $205,500. Services include topographic survey, preliminary design documents and estimate, final design documents and estimate, bidding services, and construction administration services.
