Q&A: Company closes on Popeye’s property; pasteboard ok to recycle

April 3, 2018

Is there any truth to the rumor that Popeye’s isn’t coming to Bartlesville?

Plans are still on to construct a Popeye’s restaurant in Bartlesville. In fact, Heaven Sent Properties LLC closed on the property — the site of the former Sooner Motel, at 1300 S.E. Washington Blvd. — last week. The Bartlesville Development Authority has been authorized to reimburse up to $65,000 for the demolition of the structures on the property. No word yet on when the demolition will begin.

Correction: Pasteboard ok to recycle at City center

In last week’s edition of City Beat, we published some “dos and don’ts” for dropping off recyclables at the City of Bartlesville’s Recycling Center, located on 10th Street just east of Virginia Avenue. “City recycling center dos and don’t” prompted numerous questions from you, mostly regarding references to pasteboard and whether it is allowed at the center, among other questions.

Between at least one misunderstanding and some changes made recently at the center, some of the information contained in last week’s story is incorrect. Please see the corrected and clarified information below. (Also note the archived copy of the March 27 edition of City Beat has been corrected on the City’s website, www.cityofbartlesville.org.)

Some of us may not be completely sure what pasteboard is. Apparently cereal boxes are accepted – I always thought cereal boxes were pasteboard boxes. Can we get more examples of what pasteboard is and what it isn’t?

You are correct. This is just one version of the many questions received concerning pasteboard. It should put everybody’s mind at ease to know that contrary to information published last week, pasteboard IS permitted at the center. Examples of pasteboard include cereal boxes and drink boxes.

Does pasteboard go in the paper recycling area instead of the cardboard box area? And do cereal boxes go in paper instead of in cardboard?

Pasteboard, including cereal boxes and drink containers, go in the “Paper” container — not the “Cardboard” container.

Is the cardboard bin only for corrugated cardboard?

Yes, the cardboard container is ONLY for corrugated cardboard.

A lot of junk mail is a thin cardboard with a slick glossy texture. Is that ok? If yes, paper bin or cardboard?

Yes, slick glossy and thin cardboard are accepted and should be put in the “Paper” container.

Are prescription drugs included in the pharmaceutical category?

Pill bottles — including lids — go in the “Plastics” container. No drugs of any kind are permitted. And while it’s not specifically prohibited, the City highly recommends removing labels from pill bottles for security reasons.
